I was just wondering what do mega pixels matter with cameras?

I am on the yearbook staff at my school, and one of the cool things that we get to do is take pictures in class and what-not, but, the pictures have to be good quality to be printable in the yearbook. We were told to change the DPI or Mega-pixels on our cameras to the highest setting. I cannot figure out how to do that on mine.

I have a Canon PowerShot A520. Please help me change it so that I can take good pictures for the year book =]

I just started looking at digital cameras and there’s a giant range in the number of mega pixels from camera to camera. How much do they matter? There seems to be no real correlation between the number and price between brands…
I’m a reporter and will be using this for pictures on the go. I want it to take photos as steady as possible–my hands shake sometimes!! I’m looking for a camera that can fit in my pocket. My ideal price range is about $2-300.
